Summary	History Maker Bios Series: Describes the life and work of Florence Nightingale, the nineteenth-century English woman considered to be the founder of modern nursing. This is an example of many books on Florence Nightingale that were written for young children. It is in these books where the story of the Lady with the Lamp gets told again and again, branding the image of the young lady in her pristine Victorian dress with lamp in hand, and; childhood images die slowly if at all. There were books written for little girls even prior to her death in 1910. These books have a consistent theme of the merciful Angel who sacrificed for others. Initially, they may have been used, not only to attract young girls to nursing, but also instill morals. The story of Florence Nightingale continues to be the subject of many recently published books for children.
