Summary
History Maker Bios Series : Describes the life and work of Florence Nightingale , the nineteenth-century English woman considered to be the founder of modern nursing . This is an example of many books on Florence Nightingale that were written for young children . It is in these books where the story of the Lady with the Lamp gets told again and again , branding the image of the young lady in her pristine Victorian dress with lamp in hand , and; childhood images die slowly if at all . There were books written for little girls even prior to her death in 1910 . These books have a consistent theme of the merciful Angel who sacrificed for others . Initially , they may have been used , not only to attract young girls to nursing , but also instill morals . The story of Florence Nightingale continues to be the subject of many recently published books for children .
